Low-Cost & Free Health Care Coverage for Children & Families: 1-877-KIDS-NOW

Today, roughly 45,000 children in Massachusetts live without health insurance. For these children, a trip to the doctor or the need for a prescription medication becomes a burden many families can't bear. But there is good news: many children are eligible for free or low-cost health insurance through MassHealth. Call the Covering Kids and Families toll-free hotline to find out if a child you know is eligible.

Notice: Termination of MassHealth Benefits

On March 17, 2003, the Commonwealth sent out approximately 36,000 termination notices to long-term unemployed individuals who are receiving MassHealth basic benefits. If you have received one of these termination notices, you have the right to file an individual appeal contesting the termination within 30 days; if you file before April 1st, you will keep your benefits pending the appeal. Greater Boston Legal Services has set up a hotline to advise individuals who have lost these benefits: (617) 603-1654.

Free Tax Preparation: Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) Action Coalition

Each year, millions of Federal tax refund dollars go unclaimed -- and many of those dollars belong to low- and middle-income families. The EITC Action Coalition was established to offer free tax-return service for these individuals in Boston to make sure they receive the full extent of their refunds. Visit the Earned Income Tax Credit Action Coalition homepage for more information. For those living outside the Boston area who qualify, the Internal Revenue Service also offers free tax preparation assistance; visit their website at www.irs.gov or call their toll-free number for more information: 1-800-829-1040 (in English and Spanish).
